Abstract
Mini-implant is effectively used as a stabilizer of loose lower full denture. This retrospective study investigated miniimplants which are used under lower full denture. In edentulous mandible of 18 elderly patients(male 5 & female 13, mean 75 years old), 85 mini-implants were placed by modified technique which is minimally occurring the dead bone of peri-implant and the placement stent fabricated from new denture and loaded progressively. All lower dentures were supported by 3-6 mini-implants. They had systemic disease: hypertension in 10 cases, DM in 5 cases, degenerative arthritis in 2 cases etc. and normal systemic condition in 4 cases and 2 or more systemic disease in 6 cases. The opposite dentition was full denture in 14 cases, partial denture in 3 cases, and implant-supported prosthesis in 1 case.
Of 85 mini-implant placed, it consists of 47 Mini Drive-Lock(MDL)TM (Intra-Lock system, Intra-Lock international Inc.) 32
slimonebodyTM (Dentium Co.), and 6 S-miniTM (Neobiotech Co.). Mini-implants were mostly placed over 2.5 mm ¡¿10 mm. Eighty mini-implants were placed in the inter-foraminal region of anterior mandible. Based to a well-established set of implant success criteria, mini-implant survival was investigated. The duration of followup was from 18 months to 60 months. All mini-implants were survived, except of 1 removal of CRF elderly patient. Based on these results, it is concluded that mini-implant retained-supported denture is an effective replacement alternative in edentulous mandible of elderly patients with the opposite denture.
